We Are Not Afraid

We Are Not Afraid: A fitting response to show the world that terror tactics will not prevail. Terrorism fails if it does not cause terror. This is a way that all of us can combat terrorism -- if we refuse to be terrorized then its only a matter of time before the terrorists are stopped.

I am really glad to know that Mario had a bit of luck. In all seriousness, I really like this post. I can’t help but wonder, however, if fighting a “War on Terror” goes against this entire premise. Doesn’t the fact that we are willing to commit billions of dollars and thousands of lives to “bring evil-doers to justice” prove that we are terrified and that terror tactics do work?

Well, I don't think so. I don't think you have to be terrified of something to work to end it. It seems to me that by the logic you are using the only un-terrified approach is to not fight back against the terrorists. That doesn't show a society unterrified, it shows a society ignorant and foolish. I just don't think that because you respond to something forcfully it means you are terrified of it, it just means that you are dedicated to ending it quickly. Its different to be hurt by something than to be terrorized by it. We are hurt by terrorists and terrorism so we move to stop it. But we are not terrorized, and as long as we are not they will have a hard time -- eventually -- convincing others that it is a useful approach to attacking us. I hope, anyway.

Fair enough. That is a really good distinction and I withdraw my observation as false.
